Thiagarajar College is a college located in Madurai, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Started on July 7, 1949, the college was formally declared open by the Maharaja of Bhavnagar, the then Governor of Madras, on October 12, 1949.
== History ==
The college was established in 1949 by Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, a 20th-century South Indian philanthropist. Its mission is to provide quality higher education to the rural masses to realize the vision of Mahatma Gandhi. The college is located 4 km south-east of the Temple of Goddess Meenakshi, and has Vaigai to its north and Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam to its south.
The college offered 4 degree programs in 1949, which has now expanded to 38, including 4 certified and 3 diploma courses. The college also has a research center (established in 1978). The college has been autonomous since 1987 and became fully co-ed since 1998.
